Why layout makes the difference
A reader identifies a self-published book in under ten seconds. Not necessarily because of the text, but because of the layout: margins too narrow, inappropriate line spacing, text body too large, ornaments absent or poorly placed. These visual signals immediately betray unprofessional work.
Conversely, a careful layout lends credibility to the book and improves the reading experience. Traditional publishers have developed these typographic rules over centuries. Folio Studio encapsulates them in 15 ready-to-use templates, adapted to each genre.
What Folio Studio handles automatically
Asymmetric margins for binding
The inner margin is automatically wider than the outer margin to compensate for the binding effect. Invisible in print, essential for reading comfort.
15 templates by genre
Classic novel, thriller, romance, essay, poetry: each template is calibrated for its genre. Garamond for historical fiction, Georgia for thrillers, Lora for romance.
Fonts embedded in the PDF
Typographic fonts are embedded in the PDF file. The printer sees exactly what you designed, regardless of their configuration.
Preview before printing
Review every page of your book before exporting: page numbers, headers, ornaments, scene separators. Fix anything you don't like without reprinting.

Lay out my book →Frequently asked questions
Will my PDF be accepted by KDP Print?
Yes, provided you choose the correct page size (e.g. 4.25 x 6.88 inches for mass market paperback) in the project settings. Folio Studio generates a PDF with embedded fonts and the specifications required by KDP Print.
What's the difference between a normal PDF and a print-ready PDF?
A print-ready PDF has embedded fonts (not just referenced), images at 300 DPI minimum, asymmetric margins adapted for binding and sometimes a bleed area. A PDF exported from Word doesn't guarantee these elements.
Can I lay out an illustrated book with Folio Studio?
Folio Studio offers an Illustrated Book mode (Pro) for albums and picture books. For novels with a few interspersed illustrations, the standard mode is sufficient.
How many pages does an 80,000-word novel make in paperback?
An 80,000-word novel in paperback format (4.25 x 6.88 inches) with 11pt font and 1.4 line spacing produces approximately 280 to 320 pages depending on the template. The Folio Studio preview gives you the exact count before exporting.
